That is one of the numbers you ought to consider when trying to make sense of the economic disaster that is America today. 13,533,000 is the increase in the number of people listed as “not in the labor force” since Barack Obama took office. That number has grown 16.8% during Barack’s supposedly “booming” economic recovery.

The BLS defines “not in the labor force” as:

The remainder—those who have no job and are not looking for one—are counted as not in the labor force. Many who are not in the labor force are going to school or are retired. Family responsibilities keep others out of the labor force. Since the mid-1990s, typically fewer than 1 in 10 people not in the labor force reported that they want a job.

During the final two years of the George W. Bush Administration the number not in the labor force creeped up by almost 4%. Historically the number of folks not participating in the labor force has hovered around 34%. Under Obama that number has increased dramatically to 37%.

Why does this matter? This essential removes 8 million people from the civilian labor force. If you add those people in to the total labor force then the unemployment rate is actually almost 10%.

Middle Class American workers have been losing good paying jobs over the last ten years and are compelled to accept service jobs, such as running restaurants, that offer less money and fewer benefits. In fact, because of Obamacare requirements, many workers are kept on a “part time” status in order for their employer to avoid providing health care insurance.

Obama and many of his sycophantic followers are delusional in praising the “strong job” recovery. Horseshit!! Americans have been losing the kinds of jobs that once funded strong communities in places like Flint, Michigan and Detroit. The closing of coal mines and steel factories have devastated communities. We also have seen the disappearance of our textile industry.

It is in this group of disenfranchised workers that Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders are resonating. While the media likes to pretend that more are flocking to Bernie, the truth is otherwise. It is Trump who is garnering millions more voters. I know that some readers here casually dismiss the fact that Trump has won 3.5 million more votes than Romney did at this stage, but those are real human beings. They are tired of being lied to. Now, I know that some of you will scream about the hypocrisy–i.e., that Trump may be lying to them.

We will find out. If Trump wins his first term but betrays the populist driven supporters then he will have an unhappy and short time in the White House. But I think that he and Sanders are both sincere about taking on the free trade dogma and the favoritism shone towards large corporations. But Trump and Sanders differ in their approach–Trump still favors a market type solution whereas Sanders opts for more government control.

The Trump/Sanders phenomena is genuine and powerful. It is not going away. Both Republican and Democrat leaders are refusing, so far at least, to come to grips with the gripes of these rebellious factions. Ignore them at your peril. They are real.
